Suggestions on Operating Marine Valves

As a crucial component of ship's piping systems, the correct operation of marine valves is essential for ensuring ship safety and improving operational efficiency. This suggestion aims to guide crew members on how to correctly and safely operate various types of marine valves, including but not limited to globe valves, check valves, and control valves.

II. Preparation Before Operation

  1. Familiarize with Valve Types and Functions: Before operation, fully understand the type, structure, working principle, and role of the valve in the system.

  2. Inspect Valve Condition: Confirm that the valve exterior is damage-free, connections are leak-tight, and the handwheel or operating lever is flexible without jamming.

  3. Safety Measures: Wear necessary personal protective equipment, such as safety helmets, protective goggles, and gloves; ensure the operation area is well-ventilated and free from flammable and explosive materials.

III. Operation Steps

  1. Opening the Valve:

    • Slowly rotate the handwheel or operating lever to avoid sudden opening that may cause impact.

    • For valves requiring multiple turns, rotate evenly turn by turn until the desired opening is achieved.

    • Observe changes in pressure gauges, flow meters, and other indicating instruments to ensure stable system operation.

  1. Closing the Valve:

    • Also proceed slowly to avoid rapid closing that may induce water hammer or damage the valve.

    • For valves requiring tightness, apply additional force after closing to confirm sealing.

    • Check for leaks around the valve and piping after closing.

  2. Adjusting the Valve:

    • Adjust the valve opening according to system requirements, observing and adjusting to the optimal working state.

    • Regularly inspect the automatic adjustment function of control valves to ensure accuracy and reliability.

IV. Post-Operation Maintenance

  1. Cleaning and Inspection: After operation, clean the valve surface of dirt and inspect the sealing surface, connections, etc., for integrity.

  2. Regular Maintenance: Follow the ship's maintenance schedule to perform lubrication, tightening, replacement of wearing parts, and other maintenance tasks on the valves.

  3. Recording and Reporting: Record valve operation times, status changes, and maintenance activities, and report any abnormalities promptly.

V. Safety Precautions

  1. Avoid Operation Under High Temperature and Pressure: When the temperature or pressure near the valve is too high, wait until it drops to a safe range before operating.

  2. Operation in Emergencies: Be familiar with the location and operation method of emergency shut-off valves to respond quickly in emergencies.

  3. Training and Exercises: Regularly train crew members on valve operation to enhance emergency response capabilities.
